Year 12 students at Woolwich Polytechnic for Boys recently took part in an inspiring, hands‑on woodworking workshop led by Mr. Thomas, a trainee teacher and skilled furniture maker.
The session introduced students to the art of dovetail joints using traditional Japanese saw techniques – a practice that blends precision, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage. Stepping away from theory, pupils experienced the tactile satisfaction of working directly with wood.
Guided by Mr. Thomas, they learned how to measure, mark, and cut dovetail joints with a Japanese pull saw, a tool celebrated for its accuracy and efficiency. The challenge demanded patience and attention to detail, qualities essential for producing high‑quality joinery. Students embraced the process enthusiastically, gaining both technical skill and a deeper appreciation for the discipline of woodworking.
